Druk-yul, the Land of the Dragon, is the name by which Bhutan is known to its inhabitants. It is still largely unaffected by Western influences, and is a stronghold of Tibetan Buddhism. Protected by the Himalaya a visit to this isolated kingdom is an unforgettable experience. Bhutan is one of the very few areas in the Himalaya where the traditional way of life survives unchanged by the passage of time. The unusual architecture and national dress are evidence of the people’s national pride and governmental policies such as GNH (Gross National Happiness) are evidence in the people’s manner. The superb Dzongs, a mixture of monasteries and fortresses, dotted in the valleys and on hilltops are full of priceless religious artefacts and many are still active monasteries.
