Land of the Thunder Dragon

Land of the Thunder Dragon

From Kathmandu into Bhutan

Your Himalayan holiday begins in Kathmandu - the ancient medieval capital of Nepal. Here you’ll visit the Hindu holy shrines at Pashupatinath, return the gaze of Buddha’s all-seeing eyes at Swayumbunath temple and join the hustle and bustle of daily life in Durbar Square. A memorable flight across the southern flank of the mighty Himalaya takes you into Bhutan - Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Sacred Bhutan

Arriving in Paro you’re immediately immersed into the magical history and culture of Bhutan. You’ll visit the forbidding walls of Rinpung Dzong - a 17th century fortress - and can walk to the cliff top retreat of Taktsang Monastery – the ‘Tiger’s Nest’. From the capital of Thimpu, you’ll visit local arts and craft museums, see rare Takin a type of Musk Ox and drive across the 3050 metre high Dochu La Pass to overnight in the delightful Punakha valley. Finally, you return to Kathmandu where you can reflect on your holiday adventures before you head home

Paro and Thimpu Festivals

Bhutan is renowned for its colourful festivals celebrating traditions, life and ancient legends. Your itinerary will be specially tailored to include time at the two largest such festivals: Paro in the spring and Thimpu in the autumn. See our Trip Dossier or speak to one of our Travel Consultants for more details of this memorable holiday

Distinctive Accommodation

The Hotel Vajra is situated beneath one of Kathmandu’s most famous sights - Swayumbunath temple. Its hillside location offers superb views over the Kathamandu Valley to the Himalayas beyond. Whilst in Bhutan you’ll stay in more simple hotels; these are of a good standard and all provide en suite accommodation.

Responsible Travel

Visitor numbers to Bhutan are limited by the government and the revenue generated by tourism is proactively used to preserve the country’s landscapes and heritage.
